X Ceases Operations in Brazil After Refusing to Comply With Censorship Orders

X’s Global Government Affairs Team reported on August 17 that the social network would be forced to shut down its local operations in Brazil due to judicial orders issued against its legal representative. The order, issued by Alexandre de Moraes, a member of the Supreme Federal Tribunal, would have this legal representative facing jail time if the organization did not comply with these censorship orders. X’s team stated that de Moraes chose to “threaten our staff in Brazil rather than respect the law or due process” and that it would be closing its operations, while still allowing Brazilian users to access its platform. X owner Elon Musk called de Moraes “an utter disgrace to justice.”
