On Wednesday, the blockchain interoperability platform Wormhole revealed it is collaborating with the American multinational semiconductor company AMD (Advanced Micro Devices). AMD’s FPGA Tech to Power Wormhole’s Interoperability Ambitions
Wormhole, an interoperability platform for blockchains, relies on a network of validators called “Guardians” to ensure security and consensus in a Byzantine fault tolerant (BFT) manner. This system requires users and applications to trust not only the originating blockchain’s consensus mechanism but also Wormhole’s consensus process.
Looking ahead, Wormhole plans to integrate zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs to enhance the platform’s trustworthiness. However, the adoption of ZK proofs introduces significant computational demands, complicating the maintenance of the network.

AMD is stepping in to address this challenge by providing its enterprise-grade FPGAs, which are designed to handle large-scale computational tasks efficiently. These FPGAs can parallelize extensive workloads, enabling the processing of millions of messages across multiple blockchains.

In AMD’s recent announcement, Wormhole expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with AMD to “help realize its vision of a trust-minimized interoperability platform for Web3.” As a provider of technological services, AMD stated that it is dedicated to promoting the “development and use of zero-knowledge cryptography.”
The infrastructure Wormhole envisions seeks to establish secure links to blockchains such as Cosmos, Near, Ethereum, and others, utilizing AMD’s hardware to handle the computational load. AMD’s announcement further details that Wormhole is intensively investigating enhancements for vital zero-knowledge cryptographic components.
Components include low-degree extensions (LDE), Number Theoretic Transforms (NTTs), and others, aiming to slash proof generation time—a significant cryptographic bottleneck. Teaming up with AMD, Wormhole details it’s focus sharpens on speeding up Fast Reed Solomon Interactive Oracle Proofs of Proximity (FRI) and boosting hashing and Merkle tree construction efficiencies.
This collaboration, AMD detailed on Wednesday, underscores a deliberate effort to elevate the computational effectiveness and safety of cryptographic protocols, capitalizing on AMD’s tech innovations to propel Wormhole’s zero-knowledge proof proficiency. At the end of January 2024, Wormhole published the project’s ZK roadmap aimed at enhancing ZK-enabled interoperability.
