Wazirx Files FIR Following Cyberattack on Multisig Wallet
On Tuesday, Indian crypto exchange Wazirx provided an update on the recent cyberattack after several days of little information, which had left users concerned. Nischal Shetty, cofounder of Wazirx, announced on Tuesday that a First Information Report (FIR) has been filed in response to the attack that compromised one of the exchange’s multisig wallets and saw over $230 million stolen.
“FIR has been filed,” Shetty wrote on X. However, many have questioned the delay between the initial complaint and the filing of the FIR. Addressing the speculation about why the FIR was filed nearly 20 days after the hack, which occurred on July 18, Shetty clarified:
We had filed a police complaint next day of the cyberattack and had already made the announcement to everyone that police complaint has been filed. It generally takes time for FIR after filing of the complaint.
Shetty assured customers that the crypto firm is committed to finding the perpetrators and recovering the stolen funds. “All we ask for is time so that we can work on the way forward,” he emphasized.
Wazirx also confirmed the FIR filing in a separate post on X Tuesday. The FIR was filed on Aug. 5 at the Police Station Special Cell, Lodhi Colony, New Delhi, the exchange detailed, adding that the investigation is being handled by the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit of the Delhi Police.
Following the hack, Wazirx set up a poll to help decide on the reopening of the exchange for withdrawals and trading. On Saturday, Shetty announced that the poll has ended. “We’re analysing all the data based on the votes received,” he shared, adding:
It’s important to note that as we had previously announced, this poll was one of the methods to better understand our users preferences. We continue to work on more options to help reduce the gap. These options take longer.
