US District Judge Sanctions Binance's $4.3 Billion Plea Deal

Historic $4.3 Billion Binance Settlement Approved by Seattle Judge

Binance, the globe’s leading cryptocurrency exchange by international trading volume, is set to disburse $4.3 billion following the sanctioning of its plea agreement by Judge Jones. This settlement ranks among the heftiest in legal history, alongside the $3.5 billion agreement with American Home Products, Tyco International’s $3.2 billion legal settlement, and the $2.83 billion in fines paid by Cendant Corporation.

Three days prior, Bitcoin.com News reported that prosecutors had pressed a U.S. court to endorse a fine levied against the cryptocurrency exchange. Bloomberg’s Sabrina Willmer and Anna Edgerton covered the court’s ruling on Friday. They captured Judge Jones’s sentiment, stating, “This really is a case where the ethics of the company were compromised by greed.”

Beyond the hefty fine, Binance consented to oversight by an external monitor, and its founder Changpeng Zhao, also known as CZ, was mandated to resign. Richard Teng, Binance’s Global Head of Regional Markets, was appointed CEO. Binance’s legal deputy, Josh Eaton, acknowledged the crypto exchange “accepts full responsibility for its past and for the reasons we’re sitting here today.”

The attorney also highlighted the company’s pride in the “compliance enhancements” it has implemented. CZ is poised for sentencing set for April and faces roughly 18 months in prison. Despite attempts to secure permission to leave the U.S. before his sentencing, the former CEO was remanded to remain within the continental United States. CZ’s plea deal was accepted by the court in December 2023.
