Ukrainian Police Detain Suspects in Abduction, Murder of Foreigner Over Bitcoin

Police Recover Body of Slain Foreign National

The Ukrainian police announced on July 29 that it arrested four men for abducting and coercing a foreign national into transferring his bitcoins before ultimately murdering him. According to a statement from the Kyiv police, the suspects, aged between 24 and 29, now face potential life imprisonment for their actions.

The statement does not specify the exact date of the crime, but it reveals that the quartet targeted a 29-year-old foreign national who possessed bitcoins valued at over $170,000 or almost 7 million hryvnias. After tracking the victim to his place of residence, the four men seized him and forcibly took him to an abandoned building in the Ukrainian capital.

“There they forced him to transfer bitcoins to their crypto wallet, which were then transferred to cash, and the man was killed. To hide the traces of the crime, the number plates and appearance of the car were changed, and the body was taken to the forest, where it was buried,” the police added.

However, the Ukrainian police later received information about the incident from residents in the Solomyansk district who heard the late victim’s screams when he was abducted. Acting on this information, the police launched a special operation to apprehend the assailants. During the operation, police recovered money, the vehicle used in the kidnapping, and other material evidence.

Meanwhile, the statement issued by Maria Bakardzhieva from the Police Communications Division in Kyiv revealed the detained men have been informed of the charges they face.
