Eyes on the SEC: How a Key Power Shift Could Redefine Crypto’s Path
Following the U.S. presidential election, speculation is rising about a possible leadership shift at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), with expected implications for cryptocurrency regulation. President-elect Donald Trump has pledged to remove SEC Chair Gary Gensler on his first day in office, sparking renewed attention within the crypto sector. Gensler has faced sharp criticism for his “regulation-by-enforcement” strategy toward digital asset regulation.
A leadership change at the SEC is seen by many in the cryptocurrency industry as a chance to pivot toward a regulatory framework more supportive of crypto. Commissioner Hester Peirce, a known critic of Gensler’s enforcement-driven approach, is viewed by numerous industry members as a favorable choice. Recognized for advocating regulatory clarity over punitive actions, Peirce has long supported a transparent framework that fosters crypto innovation. Her industry supporters, including Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, have praised her balanced approach. Armstrong wrote on Friday on social media platform X:
She would be the best choice. Smart, fair, professional. Can work with both sides.
Peirce, known as “ Crypto Mom” for her dissents on SEC actions against crypto firms, appears unlikely to pursue the SEC chair role and plans to leave when her term ends in June 2025. Although she may reconsider if requested by the president, she currently favors roles outside of government.
Instead, Commissioner Mark Uyeda is seen as a potential successor if Trump proceeds with replacing Gensler. Peirce is respected in the crypto community for her focus on transparent, innovation-friendly regulation, as reflected in her Token Safe Harbor Proposal, which advocates for clear guidance and a grace period for blockchain projects to decentralize before facing full compliance.
