U.S. Iran Ceasefire April 2026: Trump Cites Pakistan’s Sharif and Munir

The announcement came via Truth Social around 6:32 p.m. Eastern time, just minutes before an 8:00 p.m. deadline Trump had set for potential major strikes on Iranian infrastructure. Trump credited Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir for directly requesting the pause and enabling a diplomatic off-ramp.

“Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, of Pakistan, and wherein they requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran,” Trump wrote, “I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks. This will be a double-sided CEASEFIRE!”

Trump stated that U.S. forces had “met and exceeded all Military objectives” before the pause, framing the suspension as a position of strength rather than retreat.

The central condition of the agreement requires Iran to allow the complete, immediate, and safe reopening of the strait. The waterway, a narrow passage between Iran and Oman connecting the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea, carries roughly 20.3 million barrels of oil per day and significant volumes of liquefied natural gas.

Iran had closed the strait in recent weeks following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iranian targets. The closure rattled global energy markets and raised concerns about supply disruptions affecting roughly 20 to 30 percent of worldwide oil and LNG trade.

Trump indicated that Iran had submitted a 10-point proposal through mediators and described it as a “workable basis” for negotiations. He said most major points of disagreement between Washington and Tehran had already been resolved, with the two-week window intended to finalize a permanent deal.

Pakistan’s role in the mediation reflects the diplomatic rapport Sharif and Munir developed with Trump following a September 2025 White House visit. Sharif also posted publicly on X, calling for a two-week ceasefire extension and urging Iran to reopen the strait as a goodwill gesture.

Israel has reportedly agreed to the ceasefire terms. As of the evening of April 7, Iran had not issued a formal public confirmation of the conditions, though mediators and oil markets responded positively to the news.

Trump described the moment as historic. “On behalf of the United States of America, as President, and also representing the Countries of the Middle East, it is an Honor to have this Longterm problem close to resolution.”

Following the announcement, while Wall Street was closed, bitcoin jumped nearly 3% higher, rising to an intraday high of $71,720 per coin on Bitstamp. If Tehran accepts the terms and negotiations hold through the two-week period, it would mark a significant shift in U.S.-Iran relations after years of escalating conflict and sanctions.

The White House has not issued a separate formal statement beyond Trump’s Truth Social post as of publication time.
