Ward Roddam, mayor of the City of Rockdale in Texas, explained how the arrival of bitcoin mining revitalized the city’s economy. In a recently published opinion piece, Roddam noted that bitcoin miners took advantage of the energy infrastructure left by Alcoa, an aluminum plant that closed in 2008 due to rising energy costs and regulations. “When Alcoa left Rockdale, the economy and tax base halved. But thanks to bitcoin mining, we are today stronger than ever. Bitcoin mining companies have invested over $1 billion in Rockdale,” he stressed. Roddam also highlighted the integration of these companies into Rockdale’s community, donating to several initiatives, and called for Texas leaders to acknowledge the benefits of bitcoin mining.
