Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino Expresses Concerns About Telegram CEO Arrest, Warns About the Coming of Dark Ages

Different personalities keep expressing disdain for the arrest of Pavel Durov, founder and CEO of Telegram, a popular messaging app with over 900 million active users. Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether, one of the largest companies in the cryptocurrency environment, has given his take regarding this incident.

On social media, Ardoino lamented this development, stressing that it worried him given the state of free speech in the current geopolitical context. He declared:

The arrest of Pavel Durov for enabling free speech communications through Telegram is very concerning.

Furthermore, Ardoino warned against the possible outcome of this situation, assessing that if this battle was lost, the current communicational state would regress. “If we, as a society, lose the battle to defend freedom of speech and communication, nothing else won’t matter, dark ages will be our future,” he stated.

While Tether has collaborated many times with government agencies to help solve criminal cases involving the usage of its dollar-pegged stablecoin USDT, the company has maintained an approach favoring decentralization and encrypted communications.

In January 2023, Holepunch, A Tether-backed company, launched Keet, a private end-to-end encrypted messenger app that operates without establishing servers. The app, which also supports video calls, allows for peer-to-peer file sharing and introduces USDT payments, bringing a total decentralized ecosystem for its users.

Keet is one of the first applications of Holepunch’s platform Pear, a technology that allows for deploying apps that can be distributed without a center point of failure.
