Elon Musk Says Government Just ‘Keeps Growing’

Tesla CEO Elon Musk spoke at a conference cosponsored by the Cato Institute and Libertad y Progreso called “The Rebirth of Liberty in Argentina and Beyond” on Wednesday. He warned against the dangers of excessive regulation, stressing the government’s role in maintaining a fair and properly regulated environment.

Musk explained that over time, the government expands, leading to an excessive number of regulators compared to participants, which negatively impacts the system. “The government’s role is to ensure that the playing field is a good playing field, that there are good rules,” he said, adding:

What happens over time, though, is government keeps growing and at a certain point, you have more referees than players on the field. And then, the game is not good.

The billionaire acknowledged the necessity of having referees (regulators) but cautioned against them outnumbering the players. His key point was that the government should create sensible rules and avoid hindering the participants, ensuring that fair and effective outcomes can be achieved. Musk opined:

I’m not saying you don’t need referees, but you don’t want the referees to outnumber the players … So, just make sure that fair games are being played, that there are sensible rules and don’t get in the way of the players. And the results will be excellent.

Musk has been vocal about the impact of overregulation on innovation and progress. He similarly said in December 2020: “A lot of the time, the best thing that government can do is just get out of the way.” The CEO of Tesla criticized the government for overstepping its role, stating that it should act as a referee rather than a participant in the industry. “Where I think government does not do a great job is when they want to not just be a referee on the field, they want to be a player on the field,” Musk said.
