FBI Involved in Tracking Down Stolen Axie Infinity Assets
Web3 game developer Sky Mavis announced on June 7 that Norwegian authorities had “frozen and returned $5.7 million in stolen assets from the Ronin bridge incident.” The developer also revealed that law enforcement agencies similarly froze digital assets worth $40 million but warned recovery may take time.
In a post on social media, Sky Mavis said the Norwegian National Authority for Investigation and Prosecution of Economic and Environmental Crime (Økokrim) helped recover the stolen funds. The post also praised the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for its role in tracking down the assets.
As Bitcoin.com News previously reported, cybercriminals successfully attacked Sky Mavis’ blockchain non-fungible token ( NFT) game, Axie Infinity, after the Ronin networks were compromised. The cybercriminals reportedly made off with crypto assets worth about $620 million.
;15% of Recovered Funds Allocated to Cover Incurred Expenses
However, at the time, Sky Mavis stated it was working with law enforcement agencies and others immediately following the attack to ensure the return of the stolen assets. In its June 7 statement, the company claimed its collaboration with law enforcement and blockchain forensic teams was instrumental in recovering the stolen funds.
“Recovery of these assets requires close coordination and dedicated effort amongst law enforcement agencies, lawyers, accountants, and blockchain forensic teams such as Chainalysis. ~ 15% of recovered assets will be used to cover costs and expenses incurred by those involved in the recovery efforts,” Sky Mavis said.
The Web3 game developer stated that the remaining funds would be deposited into the Axie Infinity treasury. Regarding the frozen assets valued at $40 million, Sky Mavis reported that it is not currently in a position to predict when it will be able to recover and return these assets.
