Scottish Court Sets Precedent With Crypto-to-Cash Confiscation

Prosecutors in Scotland have made legal history by converting cryptocurrency into cash under proceeds of crime legislation. John Ross Rennie, 29, has been ordered to hand over Β£109,601 after his BTC holdings were linked to criminal activity. The case initially proposed a settlement entirely in cryptocurrency, but Judge Lady Ross sought legal clarification on whether digital assets could be used for such settlements. On Monday, at the High Court in Edinburgh, it was agreed that the bitcoin would be converted to cash. This marks the first instance in Scotland of confiscating and converting cryptocurrency through proceeds of crime laws. Rennie had previously been given a community payback order for his involvement in laundering stolen property, following a 2020 raid where police traced the cryptocurrency back to him after a robbery in Blantyre.
