Ripple has announced the development of a new product, the XRPL EVM Sidechain, which will bring Ethereum Virtual Machine ( EVM) compatibility to the XRP Ledger (XRPL). This move is expected to unlock new opportunities in decentralized finance ( defi) and real-world asset ( RWA) tokenization. The sidechain will connect to the XRPL mainnet using a bridge, with wrapped XRP (exrp) serving as the native asset and gas token. The launch of the XRPL EVM Sidechain will prioritize security and user experience, with Axelar set to be the exclusive bridge for sourcing the sidechain’s native gas token. Ripple’s engineering team is also collaborating with Peersyst to expand XRPL’s interoperability. Over the next 12-15 months, Ripple engineers will monitor the adoption and interest in XLS-38, a tool for creating custom sidechains, and propose revisions based on community input.
