Garlinghouse Urges Bipartisan Support for Cryptocurrency
Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse expressed his concerns about the partisan divide over cryptocurrency in the U.S. during the Fortune Brainstorm Tech 2024 event on Tuesday. “It’s shocking to me as a kid who grew up in Kansas that somehow a technology like this has become a partisan issue,” he stated. The Ripple executive questioned why innovation, which aims to reduce costs and improve efficiency, has become politicized.
Garlinghouse singled out Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) for using anti- crypto rhetoric as a campaign talking point. He opined:
The fact that this became partisan, I think the patient zero on that is Elizabeth Warren, who uses as a campaign talking point that all cryptos are used for bad acts, etc, which is absolutely provably not the case.
The Ripple boss noted a peculiar dynamic where Republicans are pro- crypto, while many Democrats are anti- crypto. “It makes no sense to me,” he added, referencing a tweet from a Fortune reporter about the political implications of these stances.
Garlinghouse acknowledged that some leading Democrats are reconsidering their positions on cryptocurrency. He participated in a crypto roundtable in Washington, D.C., led by California Representative Ro Khanna and attended by notable figures like Mark Cuban and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. “There are leading Democrats who, I think, are trying to solve this,” he said, mentioning a representative who admitted to having misunderstood the issue.
Despite the current partisanship, Garlinghouse remains hopeful for a bipartisan approach. He emphasized the need for clear regulations, noting that many in the crypto space are striving to follow the rules. “We’ve been asking for five years, give us clear rules of the road,” he concluded.
Garlinghouse shared on social media platform X after the event:
Essentially only in the U.S. is this even an issue… Elsewhere, folks from the public & private sectors start out by talking about how profound these technologies are and how they can improve existing systems. Let’s strive for that (as we have seen in many countries) instead of partisan BS.
