Putin Talks About Strong AI, Wants Russia to Lead the Way
The artificial intelligence (AI) topic is also becoming a geopolitical subject, as several nations try to take the lead in this new race for supremacy. President Vladimir Putin referred to the issue, stating that recent developments might lead to a breakthrough in the field.
As part of a speech at the AI Journey International Conference, Putin stated that the rapid growth of the capabilities of generative AI models is making these closer to the capabilities of human beings. He stressed that thinking, speech, memory, and understanding were considered the main human traits that are now being overtaken by these structures.

Putin explained:
More and more experts and scientists say that the development of the ability to reason will lead to the emergence of strong artificial intelligence. That is, such technologies that will outperform humans in key activities.
While there are numerous predictions on the rise of sentient artificial general intelligence (AGI) agents and the rise of the singularity, there is no guarantee that this will ever happen due to energy and tech constraints. However, even if the field doesn’t get as far as Putin predicts, the AI field is of utmost importance for the leader.
Putin acknowledged the relevance of this tech to “achieving national development goals, ensuring the strengthening of the country’s defense capability, qualitative development of the economy and social sectors, public administration, and growth of innovations.”
Consequently, he reinforced the need for Russia to become a world leader in creating AI tech and implementing it in all areas of Russian life. “Of course, we must lead the way,” he concluded, explaining that its administration would be right in trailblazing this new path with innovative examples and use cases served by AI.
