OP Labs, a software development company focusing on the Optimism ecosystem, has proposed an upgrade for the Optimism rollup called Granite, which comes to fix a series of vulnerabilities in the chain’s fault-proof system. While some high-severity vulnerabilities were encountered during external audits, OP Labs stated that none had been exploited.

Optimism Proposes Network Upgrade to Patch High Severity Vulnerabilities
Optimism, one of the top three Ethereum L2 projects by total value locked (TVL), was announced to present several vulnerabilities as part of its fault-proof system that allows users to permissionlessly make proposals about the state of Optimism used to prove withdrawals.
In a post on the Optimism Collective governance forums, Mofi, an OP Labs engineer, proposed an upgrade to the current network called Granite. The update patches a series of different severity vulnerabilities discovered by external audits carried out by Spearbit, Cantina, and Code4rena.
The Fault Proof system was rolled out in June, allowing Optimism to reach a “Stage 1” decentralization status. This means the rollup is operating with “limited training wheels” in place according to Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin.
OP Labs stated that this upgrade includes “both a set of smart contract upgrades to fix the vulnerabilities identified in the audit as well as an L2 hardfork to improve the stability and performance of the fault-proof system.”
While the referenced audits did encounter high and medium-severity vulnerabilities, OP Labs stressed that no user assets were ever at risk. Optimism has over $5 billion in TVL, commanding over 15% of the rollup market share.
As a result of this process, Optimism’s withdrawal mechanism will be reset, and all pending withdrawals will be invalidated.
While this is being taken as an emergency proposal, not all users are in favor of applying it as it is, as it could break tools using the current implementation. Some forum users called for extended documentation on what will change while others stated that the update should be audited to avoid causing “irreparable harm to the chain which will require further fixes.”
