Sam Altman, CEO of Openai, the company behind the artificial intelligence (AI) model Chatgpt, has reflected on how the new wave of universal basic income (UBI) initiatives might be organized. In an interview at the All-in podcast, Altman stated that he favored UBI initiatives given the magnitude of the changes implementing AI might bring to society’s “social contract.” However, while Altman supports traditional UBI projects, he stated that, in the future, UBI might take the form of “Universal Basic Compute,” giving each citizen a slice of the computational power of the ruling AI model at the time. This would allow each citizen to rent its processing power, donate it, or freely use it, Altman concluded.
