Close Call: Controversial ‘One Big Beautiful Bill’ Barely Clears Senate

U.S. President Donald Trump’s so-called “one big beautiful bill (OBBB),” narrowly eked out a victory after both opponents and proponents of the president’s marquee legislation were left deadlocked in a 50-50 vote on the Senate floor on Tuesday. But Vice President JD Vance stepped in and cast the tiebreaker in favor of his fellow Republicans.

The 940-page document promises to deliver the largest tax cuts in years. To help pay for the cuts, the bill is proposing to slash funding for Medicaid, a federal healthcare program for low-income Americans. The legislation also contains cuts to the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (Snap), another program for low-income citizens. But opponents of the OBBB say it will tack on trillions to the country’s ballooning debt, with none other than former Trump advisor Elon Musk, lambasting the bill.

“If this insane spending bill passes, the America Party will be formed the next day,” Musk threatened on X, a day before the Senate vote. “Our country needs an alternative to the Democrat-Republican uniparty so that the people actually have a VOICE.”

And now, with the OBBB successfully clearing the Senate, the document heads to the House of Representatives where it will surely be met with considerable resistance from Democrats and a handful of Republicans. But the president has taken on the role of salesman, framing the bill as a catalyst to an American “economic renaissance.”

“THE ONE BIG BEAUTIFUL DEAL IS ALL ABOUT G[R]OWTH. IF PASSED, AMERICA WILL HAVE AN ECONOMIC RENAISSANCE LIKE NEVER BEFORE,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Wednesday. “IT IS ALREADY HAPPENING, JUST IN ANTICIPATION OF THE BEAUTIFUL BILL. DEFICIT CUT IN HALF, RECORD INVESTMENT — CASH, FACTORIES, JOBS POURING INTO THE USA. MAGA!!!”
