Joseph Stiglitz has referred to the possible effects of a hypothetical victory by Donald Trump in the upcoming U.S. presidential election. Nobel Laureate Joseph Stiglitz Hints at Fundamental Shift for the U.S. Economy After Trump’s Victory

With only days before the upcoming U.S. presidential election, analysts and experts study the consequences of Donald Trump’s victory on the country’s economy. Joseph Stiglitz, winner of the Nobel Prize for Economics in 2021, believes that a hypothetical victory of Republican Candidate Donald Trump will originate a shift in several economic aspects of the country and the world.

Stiglitz, who received the Noble Prize in 2001 for analyzing markets’ behavior with asymmetric information, said in a recent interview that Harris would be “much better” for the U.S. economy, as she would be “more moderate.” In opposition, he stressed that Trump would bring several measures that would affect U.S. citizens, bringing inflation and higher uncertainty to U.S. markets.

Stiglitz remarked:

Trump’s policy will result in higher inflation and a weaker GDP and more inequality and poorer health.

For Stiglitz, one of the main elements of this renewed inflationary period would be the introduction of elevated tariffs on Chinese imports, which Trump already hinted at in his campaign. This would hurt citizens who would have to adapt to newly hiked prices on apparel and appliances imported from the Asian giant.

The economist notes that an increased inflation would cause the Federal Reserve to increase interest rates again, weakening the economy. This, combined with tax rate cuts “for the rich” and the elimination of Obamacare, threatens to change the current direction of the U.S. “In every dimension, he’s a danger to our economy,” Stiglitz assessed.

Nonetheless, the economist admits that even a Harris victory would continue to deepen the economic decoupling between the U.S. and China. However, Trump’s “mistaken zero-sum view of the world” would cause more harm.
