Blockchain Implementation in Preliminary Stages

The Director-General of the Nigerian Information Technology Agency, Malam Kashifu Inuwa, recently revealed that his organization has added new stakeholders to the National Blockchain Policy Steering Committee. Inuwa stated that this reorganization aims to ensure that the implementation of Nigeria’s blockchain policy aligns with its set goals and objectives.

As reported by Bitcoin.com News on May 3, 2023, the Nigerian government approved what the Information Minister, Isa Pantami, described as the national blockchain policy. At the time, Pantami disclosed that the government of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari had consulted with approximately 56 institutions and individuals before unveiling its blockchain policy.

According to a report by Nairametrics, the head of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) inaugurated the revamped committee on May 21. He mentioned that the implementation of blockchain is currently in its preliminary stages, as many people are still unaware of the technology’s potential.

In explaining the rationale behind the decision to reconstitute the committee, Inuwa said:

We realized that there was a need to infuse more members into the committee to ensure that we have full membership from both the public and private sectors to prevent any past occurrences.

Although the policy is a product of Buhari’s government, Inuwa suggested that the policy aligns with the goal of the current Nigerian leader, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which is to empower citizens and businesses with secure and inclusive digital solutions.
