New Initiative: Pakistan Allocates 2,000 MW for Bitcoin Mining and AI

Pakistan announced on May 25 a national initiative to allocate 2,000 megawatts (MW) in its initial phase to power bitcoin mining and artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. This strategic move by the finance ministry aims to leverage the nation’s excess generation capacity, a persistent challenge in its energy sector. The country’s energy landscape has been complicated by high tariffs and the rapid expansion of solar energy, prompting many consumers to seek alternative, cheaper power sources, which has contributed to the existing surplus. Beyond utilizing the excess electricity, the government aims to create high-tech jobs and attract foreign investment. The allocation of 2,000 MW marks the first step in a multi-stage digital infrastructure rollout.
