Mintlayer Update Enables Native Bitcoin Cross-Chain on its Testnet
Press release

Mintlayer, a Bitcoin Layer 2 sidechain, is revolutionizing Bitcoin’s capabilities by facilitating native BTC cross-chain swaps, smart contracts, and real-world asset tokenization.

Mintlayer is excited to announce the release of version 0.6.0, a significant milestone nearly completing the original vision for a robust and decentralized platform that enhances Bitcoin’s functionality. This release, currently active on Mintlayer’s testnet and soon to transition to its mainnet, includes major enhancements such as the implementation of native Bitcoin Cross-Chain Swaps (also known as Atomic Swaps) via Hash Time Locked Contracts (HTLCs).

Key Updates in Version 0.6.0:

  • Native Bitcoin Atomic Swaps: The introduction of HTLC support for Bitcoin-Mintlayer Atomic Swaps allows for secure, decentralized exchanges directly between Bitcoin and Mintlayer. This is part of Mintlayer’s broader strategy to eliminate intermediaries and increase transaction security.
  • Enhanced Atomic Swap Capabilities: This version also includes ANYONECANTAKE support for Mintlayer-Mintlayer swaps, increasing the flexibility and potential of peer-to-peer transactions within Mintlayer’s ecosystem.
  • Trezor Custom Firmware Support: Integrating deeper hardware wallet functionalities to enhance security for our users.

Understanding Atomic Swaps:

Atomic Swaps are transformative in enabling direct, peer-to-peer cryptocurrency exchanges without centralized intermediaries. Utilizing HTLCs, these swaps ensure that transactions are secure and parties fulfill their obligations or forfeit the ability to complete the transaction, thus mitigating fraud risk. Mintlayer’s implementation not only enhances security but also retains user control over assets throughout the transaction process.

The Future with ZK Thunder Network:

Looking ahead, Mintlayer’s development trajectory includes the imminent completion of the ZK Thunder Network, developed in partnership with Salus. This EVM-compatible Layer 3 scaling solution will leverage the security features of Layer 2 enhancements while introducing significant scalability and functionality to the Bitcoin network, making it more versatile for developers and users alike.

About Mintlayer:

Mintlayer is transforming the blockchain landscape by enhancing Bitcoin’s scalability and capabilities through its Layer 2 sidechain solution. Inspired by Bitcoin’s proven security model, Mintlayer introduces features like native cross-chain swaps, smart contract capabilities, and real-world asset tokenization, all designed within a decentralized framework to foster innovation while maintaining security. With Mintlayer, institutions can also leverage a simple SaaS platform for deploying tokenized real-world assets, equipped with built-in compliance features.

As Mintlayer approaches the completion of its original vision, the platform continues to set new standards in blockchain functionality and user-centric solutions. Excitingly, in the coming weeks, Mintlayer will also unveil a new ecosystem grant program, offering grants for projects looking to build exclusively on or integrate with Mintlayer.
