Metaplanet Expands Bitcoin Holdings with 555 BTC Purchase

Japanese bitcoin treasury firm Metaplanet has purchased 555 bitcoin ( BTC) increasing its total holdings to 5,555 BTC, according to an announcement the company made on Wednesday. The purchase is part of Metaplanet’s bitcoin acquisition strategy which it began implementing in April 2024 as it pivoted from a declining hotel business.

Earlier in the year, Metaplanet unveiled its so-called “21 Million Plan,” which involves issuing 21 million shares and using the funds from that issuance to purchase a total of 21,000 BTC by the end of 2026. The company has since hired prominent crypto thought leaders and analysts such as Eric Trump, Dylan LeClair and David Bailey to assist with strategic implementation.

Metaplanet plans to increase its holdings to 10,000 BTC by year-end, followed by additional purchases totaling 11,000 BTC in 2026 in order to meet its 21,000 BTC target by the end of next year. The purchase of 555 BTC announced today means the company is already more than halfway toward meeting its 10,000 BTC goal by the end of December.

“Five thousand five hundred and fifty-five BTC,” said Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich in a post on X. “In Japanese, the number five is pronounced ‘go,’ so today we’re shouting, ‘Go, go, go, go, to the moon and beyond.”
