Lost Fortune: Landfill Containing $750M in Bitcoin to Be Sealed Forever

This article was published more than a year ago. Some information may no longer be current.

A landfill in Newport, Wales, where James Howells accidentally discarded a hard drive containing 7,500 bitcoins (now worth approximately $750m or £620m) is scheduled to close in 2025-26. Howells’ attempts to sue the council for access to the site or compensation were unsuccessful. The council is planning to cap and close the landfill, which has been in use since the early 2000s, leading to a projected revenue loss. Part of the land will be used for a solar farm to power the council’s growing fleet of electric bin lorries as they transition away from diesel vehicles.
