Latam Insights Encore: Trump May Take Cues From Argentina and El Salvador to Lead Reforms in the U.S.
The victory of President-Elect Trump in the recent elections opens a path for a series of changes in the U.S. economy and current laws to achieve two objectives: improving the country’s financial situation and providing a clear regulatory framework for crypto.
Luckily, the path that Trump will begin to walk shares similarities with the Argentine and Salvadoran experiences in Latin America, featuring leaders who, like Trump, are part of a new cadre of politicians that think outside the box. The president has good relations with these leaders and has spoken with them personally, but the connections go deeper than that.
Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele recently stated that he had a phone conversation with Trump after his victory, where several relevant topics were discussed, including a “shared commitment to tackling the challenges ahead.” While there were no reports about a crypto-related convo, Bukele might serve as a beacon for Trump to spearhead a crypto renaissance in the U.S., backed by one of the most “pro- crypto” congresses elected to date, according to Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong.

Bukele has recently also committed to applying a zero-deficit budget in El Salvador that does not contemplate debt issuance in 2025. This is especially relevant because the U.S. public debt spiral is one of the problems that Trump is called to fix during his upcoming administration.
In the same way, Javier Milei’s influence is already being felt as the Department of Government Efficiency (D.O.G.E.) is being prepared to tackle the excesses of the U.S. federal government and reduce its size. Milei recently stated that Elon Musk was in contact with his minister of deregulation and transformation to import the Chainsaw model, which has reduced the state footprint by tens of thousands of job positions, to the U.S.

The ideas and actions of these two leaders will serve as an inspiration for Trump’s administration, which has the tough job of changing the country’s course to a more sustainable path.
