Tools for Humanity Praises โFairโ Investigation
The Kenyan police have reportedly concluded their investigation into Worldcoin, which authorities previously accused of operating illegally in the country. According to a local report that cites an internal police document, the closure of the probe allows Worldcoin to resume its activities in the East African nation.
The decision to end the investigation against Worldcoin came nearly a year after the company was ordered to suspend its operations. At that time of suspension, Kenyan officials were adamant that Worldcoin was not authorized to collect residentsโ data.
In response to the suspension, Worldcoin executives flew to Kenya to address concerns raised by skeptical officials. In late 2023, Bitcoin.com News reported that Worldcoin had made progress in its discussions with Kenyan authorities, and plans were underway to resume operations in early 2024.
However, a document reportedly addressed to Worldcoinโs lawyers from the Kenyan policeโs criminal investigations division did not provide reasons for ending the probe.
โUpon review of the file, the Director of Public Prosecutions,โฆ directed that the file be closed with no further police action,โ the Directorate of Criminals Investigations said in a letter dated June 14.
Responding to Kenyaโs decision to close the probe, Thomas Scott, the chief legal officer at Tools for Humanity, announced that Worldcoin would soon resume registering Kenyan users. He also commended the Directorate of Criminal Investigations for conducting a fair investigation and praised the prosecutionโs decision to drop the charges.
