Judge Refers Craig Wright for Criminal Prosecution in Bitcoin Case

This article was published more than a year ago. Some information may no longer be current.

Craig Wright has been referred for criminal investigation in Britain for alleged perjury. Wright claimed to have authored the foundational 2008 Bitcoin white paper under the pseudonym “Satoshi Nakamoto.” He pursued litigation globally, including in the UK and the U.S., asserting his claim. The Crypto Open Patent Alliance, including Block, founded by Twitter’s Jack Dorsey, sued Wright to prevent lawsuits against Bitcoin developers. In March, Judge James Mellor, a British High Court judge, ruled that the evidence overwhelmingly showed Wright was not Satoshi, citing extensive lies and forged documents. Mellor has referred Wright to Britain’s Crown Prosecution Service to consider prosecuting him for perjury and forgery and to determine if an arrest warrant or extradition should be pursued. Wright, whose current location is unknown, denied forging documents and intends to appeal. Evidence suggests he has left the UK and may be in Southeast Asia or Siberia.
