Ryan Salame Challenges Guilty Plea, Claims Government Reneged on Agreement
In a recent court filing, Ryan Salame’s legal team argued that the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan failed to honor a critical assurance made during plea negotiations. According to the filing, the government had agreed to cease its investigation into Michelle Bond, Salame’s domestic partner, in exchange for his guilty plea to campaign finance and money-transmitting crimes. The filing emphasizes that Salame’s decision to plead guilty was heavily influenced by his desire to protect Bond, who is also the mother of his eight-month-old child.
However, Salame‘s attorneys assert that the government has since reneged on this promise, resuming its investigation into Bond and pursuing an indictment against her. They have asked the court to either set aside Salame’s guilty plea on the grounds of the government’s alleged breach or compel the government to uphold its commitment by halting any further legal actions against Bond. The U.S. Attorney’s Office has not yet commented on the filing, and Salame is scheduled to begin serving a seven-and-a-half-year prison sentence on Oct. 13, 2024.
Salame’s legal team also raised concerns about the propriety of the government’s tactics, suggesting that the pressure applied to protect Bond may have unduly influenced Salame’s decision to plead guilty. They contend that the government’s actions could have skewed Salame’s assessment of the risks involved, potentially rendering his plea involuntary. As Salame’s attorneys seek relief, they argue that the government’s conduct not only breaches the terms of the plea deal but also raises broader questions about the fairness of the prosecutorial process in this case.
