French Authorities Charge Telegram CEO Durov
After Durov was taken into custody last weekend at Le Bourget airport, the 39-year-old Franco-Russian appeared before a judge on Aug. 28. French authorities accuse him of enabling criminal gangs to traffic drugs, commit fraud, distribute child pornography, and engage in money laundering—all through Telegram.
On Wednesday, reports surfaced that Paris prosecutors have officially charged Durov, with French judges setting his bail at €5 million ($5.5M). Under the bail conditions, Durov must remain in France, though prosecutors claim he has “nothing to hide.”
French President Emmanuel Macron weighed in earlier this week, asserting that while his nation cherishes freedom of expression, it must operate “within a legal framework.” NBC News reports a few of the illicit transmission charges could land Durov with a 10-year jail sentence and a maximum fine of 500,000 euros.
Paris prosecutors argue that Telegram either ignored or failed to comply with legal data requests, suggesting “complicity” on the platform’s part. Although Durov has been in detention since Saturday, Telegram maintains that it adheres to all EU regulations and enforces moderation policies.
The company argues it is “absurd to claim that a platform or its owner is responsible for abuse of that platform.”
