Tim Draper Calls Not Owning Bitcoin 'Irresponsible,' Warns of Dollar Shift

Key Takeaways

  • Draper predicted businesses would eventually accept only bitcoin.
  • His $250,000 target dates to 2018 and has missed earlier deadlines.
  • Square allows eligible sellers to accept bitcoin and receive dollars.

Draper Predicts a Shift From Dollars to Bitcoin

Individuals and companies holding traditional currencies risk falling behind if commerce shifts toward bitcoin, venture capitalist Tim Draper argued on Oct. 28. His warning about bitcoin ownership on X described businesses initially accepting the cryptocurrency alongside other payment methods, then accepting it exclusively.

The founder and managing partner of venture capital firm Draper Associates stated:

“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. It’s irresponsible to not own bitcoin.”

That change in merchant preferences would weaken demand for dollars and other government-issued currencies, prompting withdrawals from banks, he predicted. Draper wrote:

“Then people will not value dollars or fiat, and there will be a run on the banks. Eventually, the world will never be the same.”

The warning echoed comments Draper had made in the past about bitcoin ownership and financial preparedness. At the Bitcoin 2026 conference in Las Vegas, he called it irresponsible for companies not to maintain a 5% to 15% bitcoin treasury allocation.

A $250,000 Forecast and Earlier Calls to Hold Bitcoin Reserves

The $250,000 bitcoin target dates to April 2018, when Draper predicted it would be reached by 2022. He subsequently extended the deadline to mid-2023 and later suggested 2025. Those deadlines passed without the target being reached. On April 14, he renewed the forecast with an 18-month window, implying October 2027.

In his Sept. 10 remarks, Draper urged families to hold six months of expenses in bitcoin, companies to cover four weeks of payroll, and governments to allocate part of their treasuries to the cryptocurrency.

Corporate preparedness also featured in his cash management recommendations following Silicon Valley Bank’s collapse in 2023. He advised startups to maintain at least two payrolls’ worth of cash in bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies, alongside six months of short-term cash in each of two banks. Those recommendations addressed access to operating funds during banking disruptions.

Bitcoin Payments Expand Across Platforms and Restaurants

Existing payment infrastructure supports bitcoin transactions while allowing merchants to retain dollar pricing and receipts. Under Square’s bitcoin payment terms, eligible U.S. sellers outside New York can receive bitcoin or choose immediate conversion into dollars. Accepting the cryptocurrency therefore can coexist with continued use of conventional money. Square began its bitcoin payment rollout on Nov. 10, 2025, using the Lightning Network. Other providers also support cryptocurrency checkout, extending payment options across online and physical commerce.

Paypal (Nasdaq: PYPL) offers bitcoin payments with automatic currency conversion through its Pay with Crypto service for eligible U.S. merchants. Customers can pay using bitcoin and other supported cryptocurrencies, while businesses receive funds in their local currency without retaining the digital assets.

Restaurant adoption provides another example: Steak ‘n Shake began accepting bitcoin across its U.S. locations on May 16, 2025, through payment infrastructure provider Speed. Its rollout added bitcoin alongside cash and cards, illustrating the initial acceptance stage Draper described.

Draper outlined the anticipated consequences for bitcoin holders:

“The individuals and companies that are ready for the seismic shift will come out ahead. Those that are left holding legacy currency will not.”
