CZ Enters Low-Security Facility After Pleading Guilty to Money Laundering Charges

Ex-Binance boss Changpeng Zhao (CZ) is now beginning his prison sentence after admitting guilt to charges related to facilitating money laundering through the cryptocurrency exchange he established. CNBC has verified through discussions with CZ’s legal team at Latham & Watkins that the former head of Binance has departed to serve his sentence at the federal prison known as FCI Lompoc in Lompoc, California.

CZ is set to be the wealthiest individual in the U.S. to be incarcerated in a federal prison. Before starting his sentence, CZ was also ordered to pay a $50 million penalty for his offenses. He will be entering a fairly crowded facility, as the higher security U.S. Penitentiary at Lompoc began transferring inmates to FCI Lompoc last year due to pressures on general population spaces.

While CZ will be one of the most wealthy and prominent figures at FCI Lompoc, other well-known individuals have also been inmates there. Former Boeing engineer Chi Mak served 24 years for economic espionage, and Reed Slatkin, co-founder of Earthlink, completed 14 years at FCI for his involvement in a $593 million Ponzi scheme involving mail fraud, wire fraud, and money laundering.

Ivan Boesky, the notorious Wall Street financier implicated in an insider trading scandal during the 1980s, also spent time at FCI Lompoc. Despite the prison’s status as a low-security facility, the California prison implements stringent security measures, including a high staff-to-inmate ratio and double-fenced perimeters equipped with advanced electronic detection systems.

The facility also features open dormitory-style living with communal bathrooms and showers, offering minimal privacy. It is further reported that inmates at FCI Lompoc are housed in a mix of units accommodating up to 250 individuals and smaller 8-person arrangements as well. Moreover, like CZ and many others, inmates at FCI Lompoc typically have low sentences, with most having fewer than 20 years remaining.
