Elon Musk Calls for US Government Reform, Cites Hurdles to Innovation

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and Spacex, reiterated his call for significant U.S. government reform in a post on social media platform X this Wednesday, warning that without meaningful changes, the country’s laws and regulations would worsen. The billionaire wrote:

Unless there is significant government reform, laws & regulations will keep getting worse every year until every great endeavor, from high-speed rail between our cities to making life multiplanetary, is effectively illegal.

His message amplifies his long-standing concerns over wasteful government spending and excessive regulation, which he believes hinder innovation and growth.

Musk’s post aligns with his previous statements on the need for a government efficiency commission, a concept he proposed to former U.S. President Donald Trump. This commission would conduct audits of federal agencies and recommend reforms.

Trump expressed approval of Musk’s offer to assist in reducing government spending, stating, “Elon, because he’s not very busy, has agreed to head that task force,” during a speech at the Economic Club of New York.

According to Trump’s advisers, the commission’s first goal would be to eliminate fraud and improper payments within six months. Musk has consistently argued that current fiscal policies are unsustainable, stating:

At current rates of government spending, America is in the fast lane to bankruptcy.

He sees reducing wasteful expenditures as essential to curbing inflation. In addition, Musk has called for reducing the number of regulations surrounding federal procurement, believing such reforms would “improve outcomes dramatically” and unlock future growth opportunities.
