Elon Musk ‘Can’t Wait’ to Overhaul Government Spending and Regulations
On Tuesday, Tesla and Spacex CEO Elon Musk expressed on his social media platform X that he is eager to address what he views as excessive waste and unnecessary regulation within the U.S. government. He wrote:
I can’t wait. There is a lot of waste and needless regulation in government that needs to go.
The Tesla billionaire’s statement was in response to a post citing a Washington Post article that reported former President Donald Trump might consider Musk for a role in auditing federal agencies.
Trump has stated that if re-elected, he is planning to involve prominent business figures, including Musk, to help streamline government operations and identify areas for budget cuts. During an interview with Trump on X, Musk expressed interest in taking on this role. “I think it would be great to just have a government efficiency commission that takes a look at these things and just ensures that the taxpayers’ hard-earned money is spent in a good way, and I’d be happy to help out on such a commission if it were formed,” Musk told the former U.S. president.
Musk has consistently voiced his opinions on government spending and regulation. In a recent series of posts, he argued that current U.S. fiscal policies are unsustainable and contributing to inflation. “At current rates of government spending, America is in the fast lane to bankruptcy,” Musk said, emphasizing that reducing wasteful government expenditures is essential to solving inflation. He has also commented, “ Inflation is caused by the Federal government spending more than it earns because they just print more money to make up the difference.”
Additionally, Musk stated:
A tremendous amount of growth and opportunity would be created by deregulation and reduction of wasteful government spending … It is high time for government & regulatory reform.
His comments have sparked discussions on the potential impact of business-oriented oversight in governmental auditing and regulatory practices, especially in light of Musk’s view that “reducing the massive number of requirements for government procurement would improve outcomes dramatically.”
