Permissionless Token Support Is Coming to Eigenlayer
Eigen Labs revealed it is set to release an update to the Eigenlayer protocol that will allow any ERC20 token to be added as a restakable asset. According to Eigen Labs, this new feature, known as Permissionless Token Support, will significantly expand the crypto economic security options available to decentralized networks by enabling a wider variety of ERC20 tokens to contribute to network security.
The team behind restaking platform Eigenlayer says tokens that can be used include native AVS tokens, stablecoins, and BTC-denominated tokens, all of which could play a role in securing the network through Eigenlayer. The update will also allow Application-Specific Virtual Machines (AVSs) to fully customize their crypto economic security profiles.
According to Eigen Labs, this capability means that AVSs can distribute work and rewards across a broader array of tokens, providing greater flexibility and utility. The team noted that the mainnet deployment of this protocol-level update is scheduled for next week, with user interface support for restakers expected later in Q3.
