Economist Steve Hanke: Research Finds Crypto Owners Are Psychopaths

Study Links Crypto Ownership to Psychopathic Traits

Economist Steve Hanke highlighted research from the University of Toronto this week, noting that the university’s researchers “found that crypto holders display lower levels of analytic and scientific thinking and are likelier to exhibit psychopathy than the general population.” He described:

Research finds: crypto owners = psychopaths.

This research, published in the peer-reviewed journal PLOS One, was authored by Shane Littrell, Casey Klofstad, and Joseph E. Uscinski. It highlights a correlation between cryptocurrency ownership and personality traits associated with the “Dark Tetrad,” including narcissism, Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and sadism.

The study, which surveyed 2,001 American adults in 2022, also reveals that 30% of respondents had owned some form of cryptocurrency. It further suggests that cryptocurrency owners are more likely to hold diverse political beliefs and are typically averse to authoritarianism.

Additionally, the research indicates that men, individuals who get their news from alternative or fringe social media, and those with a penchant for argumentative behavior are more inclined to invest in cryptocurrencies. These findings challenge the notion that crypto is exclusively a far-right financial tool, revealing a more complex spectrum of political and psychological characteristics among its owners.
