Solana-Based Dex Platform Drift to Distribute Governance Tokens via an Airdrop

Throughout the latter part of 2023 and extending into the first quarter of 2024, the popularity of airdropped tokens has significantly increased. The Solana-based decentralized exchange ( dex) Drift, which specializes in perpetual swaps on the layer one (L1) blockchain, also declared its plans to distribute crypto assets to its user base. Drift has allocated a total of one billion DRIFT governance tokens for this purpose. These tokens will be issued over a span of five years, with the majority (over 50%) earmarked for the community.

Of all DRIFT governance tokens, 10% are set aside for the initial launch phase. These particular tokens will be awarded to existing Drift users as a nod to their past contributions towards the platform’s development and expansion. An additional 25% is dedicated to protocol development, 53% is for the community, and 22% will benefit current Drift backers. Drift announced that a blog post detailing the criteria for airdrop eligibility will be published soon. Like many airdrop programs, there will also be a designated period during which eligible users may claim their DRIFT governance tokens.

The announcement aligns with recent airdrops from Ethena and Wormhole, along with numerous others that have implemented new schemes and ‘point’ systems to manage airdrop distributions. This new coin launch is in conjunction with the inauguration of the Drift DAO, which is said to be a “first-of-its-kind,” multi-branch DAO. It comprises a Realms DAO dedicated to general protocol development, a Security Council responsible for overseeing protocol upgrades, and a Futarchy DAO that will handle the allocation of technical grants.
