Report Details Do Kwon’s U.S. Extradition Request Approved by High Court
According to a detailed report by Montenegro’s Pobjeda, the High Court’s decision was influenced by an Appeals Court directive, which called for a definitive ruling on whether Do Kwon would face extradition to South Korea or the United States. The case took a notable turn when Do Kwon’s legal defense argued for his extradition to South Korea, citing numerous legal precedents and international agreements.
However, the Montenegrin daily newspaper Pobjeda reports that Montenegro’s Justice Minister Andrej Milović hinted at the political dimensions of the decision, emphasizing the United States’ status as Montenegro’s primary foreign policy partner and the desire to strengthen legal frameworks for future extraditions between the two countries.
Kwon’s arrest last year at Podgorica airport, alongside associate Han Chang-joon, revealed their attempts to flee using counterfeit Costa Rican passports. The discovery of additional Belgian travel documents during a police search added layers to their legal troubles, with the duo’s defense claiming ignorance of the forgeries, attributing their trust to a Singapore-based agency. So far, Han has been successfully extradited to South Korea.
Kwon is now confronting a slew of legal battles in the U.S., charged with serious offenses including wire fraud, commodities fraud, and securities fraud, along with conspiracy charges related to fraud and market manipulation. These charges mirror those he is also facing in South Korea, underscoring the gravity and international scope of the allegations against him.
