Ripple’s Stablecoin Race: Will It Beat the Holiday Deadline or Face Delays?
Ripple is gearing up for a high-stakes December as it races to launch its U.S. dollar-pegged stablecoin, Ripple USD (RLUSD), by year’s end. Speaking at The Block’s Emergence crypto conference in Prague, Ripple’s Chief Technology Officer David Schwartz expressed cautious optimism about meeting the timeline. Reports had speculated that Ripple would launch its stablecoin on Dec. 4, but on that date, the company clarified it is still in discussions with the New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS). Schwartz said:
I’m still hopeful that we’ll launch by the end of the year.
The stablecoin, first announced in April, is designed to function on the XRP Ledger and Ethereum networks, leveraging both platforms for broader adoption. Since August, the company has tested the stablecoin extensively and developed a wide partner network. Key exchanges supporting the launch include Uphold, Bitstamp, Bitso, Moonpay, Independent Reserve, Coinmena, and Bullish. Liquidity will be provided by market makers B2C2 and Keyrock to maintain stable trading conditions.
Despite this progress, Schwartz acknowledged potential hurdles as the holiday season approaches. “The annoying part for us is we’re getting close to the holidays, and we have partners that want to hit the ground running,” he said.
Schwartz also emphasized the critical role of regulatory compliance in the stablecoin’s rollout. He detailed:
There’s a lot of moving parts involved, and the big one is the stablecoin is launched through a New York state trust, and it’s regulated by the New York State Department of Financial Services.
He noted that the New York financial regulator is conducting a thorough review of Ripple’s processes and compliance. “Very much looking forward to having the launch headaches behind us, but we will get there,” Schwartz concluded.
