China and South Africa Reaffirm Commitment to Strengthening BRICS Cooperation

According to the Joint Statement between the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of South Africa on the occasion of the 2nd State Visit to China by President Cyril Ramaphosa, held on September 2, 2024, both leaders focused on advancing cooperation within the BRICS framework.

During discussions in Beijing, President Xi Jinping and President Ramaphosa highlighted the recent expansion of BRICS, describing it as a “historic” development. They reiterated their commitment to using BRICS as a platform to foster economic cooperation and promote sustainable development among member countries. As stated in the joint statement:

Both sides agree to continue strengthening coordination and collaboration under the BRICS mechanism and work for more practical outcomes of cooperation of an expanded BRICS.

The statement outlined their shared vision for reforming international financial institutions to better represent developing nations, consistent with the growing influence of BRICS. Both leaders agreed on the need for coordinated economic policies to improve trade and increase market access among BRICS members.

They also underscored the importance of modernizing their economies through cooperation in digital technology, new energy sectors, and infrastructure. Additionally, the leaders emphasized the importance of fair and inclusive economic practices to enhance economic ties within BRICS. The joint statement stressed the pivotal role of BRICS in establishing a fairer and more inclusive global economic order, reflecting the aspirations of developing countries for a more equitable international system.
