A major payments firm in Cambodia, Huione Pay, received over $150,000 in cryptocurrency from a digital wallet used by the North Korean hacking group Lazarus, according to blockchain data reviewed by Reuters. The crypto was sent to Huione Pay between June 2023 and February 2024 from a wallet linked to funds stolen from Atomic Wallet, Coinspaid, and Alphapo via phishing attacks. The FBI reported that Lazarus stole around $160 million from these companies. Huione Pay, which denies knowing the source of the funds, stated the wallet involved was not under its control. Blockchain analysis firms like TRM Labs and Merkle Science traced the stolen funds to Huione Pay through multiple transactions, noting that the funds were laundered into tether ( USDT) on the Tron blockchain. Cambodiaβs National Bank prohibits payment firms from dealing with cryptocurrencies and is drafting regulations to address illegal crypto activities.
