BOS Verifies ZK Proof on Bitcoin

BOS, a protocol for trustless and interoperable Bitcoin rollups, disclosed to Bitcoin.com News that it had accomplished this milestone, which potentially eliminates the need for Bitcoin Improvement Proposals. According to Edan Yago, a core contributor, this is one of the first permissionless upgrades for Bitcoin, paving the way for more efficient and decentralized development on the network.

“With BOS, the dependence on Bitcoin Improvement Proposals to introduce changes such as covenants to Bitcoin is massively reduced or, potentially, completely eliminated,” Yago stated. “This paves the way for more developers to build on Bitcoin more efficiently and enables true decentralization.”

The newly implemented BitSNARK technology within BOS enables developers to verify zero-knowledge proofs (zkSNARKs) on Bitcoin, facilitating near-trustless layer-two ( L2) rollups. This allows for the creation of conditional payments and bridges between the Bitcoin mainchain and L2 rollups.

The team told Bitcoin.com News that, unlike existing models, BOS requires trust in a decentralized operator set, ensuring strong security against threats, including those from a coalition of nation-states. This innovation positions BOS to integrate Bitcoin’s security with the functionalities of other networks, potentially drawing the altcoin ecosystem back to Bitcoin.

“We are proud to empower the industry to fulfill the original Bitcoin promise of a trustless peer-to-peer digital money system for the world, while forever remaining a decentralized, immutable, and secure bedrock of economic truth,” the BOS core contributor concluded.
