Bitcoin Is Like a Digital Oil Well, Poised to Fuel the Economic Revival of Rural Texas’

Ward Roddam, mayor of Rockdale, Texas, shared his views on the transformative role of bitcoin mining in his community, comparing it to the oil boom that once modernized the state. Writing for the Austin American-Statesman, Roddam explained how Rockdale’s economic future had seemed bleak after the 2008 closure of the Alcoa aluminum plant, which had been the town’s main employer since 1952.

“When Alcoa left Rockdale, the economy and tax base halved,” he wrote. The plant’s closure led to significant job losses and a sharp drop in tax revenue, severely limiting the town’s ability to fund essential services like schools and parks. However, the mayor credited bitcoin mining for breathing new life into Rockdale by utilizing the energy infrastructure left behind by Alcoa. Highlighting the industry’s impact in creating jobs and boosting local revenue, he opined:

As both mayor and a lifelong resident of Rockdale, I learned that bitcoin miners are deeply invested in the communities where they work.

“In Rockdale, these companies now employ hundreds of people. They’ve created mid-skill jobs, allowing locals to find well-paying employment without leaving town,” he detailed.

Mayor Roddam noted: “Thanks to bitcoin mining, we are today stronger than ever. Bitcoin mining companies have invested over $1 billion in Rockdale. They’re among the largest taxpayers in Milam County and our local school district. Beyond tax revenue, these companies donate to local causes, including scholarships, police and fire departments, youth sports, and the Chamber of Commerce. They sponsor community events like the annual Christmas tree lighting.”

Urging state lawmakers to acknowledge the positive impact of bitcoin mining, Roddam stressed:

Texas leaders should recognize the benefits of bitcoin mining. Bitcoin is like a digital oil well, poised to fuel the economic revival of rural Texas — if we allow it to grow.
