Bitcoin-Rich Bhutan Transfers Millions—Third-Largest Nation Holder on the Move

After Thursday morning’s transaction, the Royal Government of Bhutan now holds 11,711 BTC, valued at $1.32 billion. This bitcoin stash is managed by Druk Holding and Investments Limited (DHI), the government’s commercial and investment wing, created by Royal Charter back in 2007.

The bitcoin transfer was first spotted by the onchain explorer and analytics platform Arkham Intelligence, which flagged Bhutan’s latest BTC activity. “Is the government of Bhutan selling bitcoin?” Arkham asked on the social media platform X. “Bhutan’s Government just transferred 213.5 BTC ($23.73M) to their Binance deposit. The last time they did this was at the end of June.”

Bhutan officially ranks as the third-largest nation-state holder of BTC, trailing only the United States and the United Kingdom. The country mines bitcoin using renewable energy, and just a few months ago, Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay noted that BTC profits support pay raises for policymakers and help fund healthcare programs.
