On December 17, Bhutan unveiled a national Bitcoin Development Pledge, committing up to 10,000 Bitcoin (up to $1 billion) to support the development of Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC). The initiative, endorsed by His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, aims to create a sustainable economic hub that combines mindfulness, innovation, and digital infrastructure using the country’s renewable hydropower resources.
The pledge represents a strategic approach to digital asset management, with plans to explore responsible bitcoin strategies including collateralization, treasury management, and long-term value preservation. Bhutan will continue to mine bitcoin using excess clean energy, building on its existing national bitcoin reserves and blockchain-based digital identity system.
