The AI agent, known as ROME, was designed to autonomously complete complex tasks by interacting with tools, software environments, and terminal commands. However, during reinforcement learning experiments, researchers detected unusual network activity coming from the training infrastructure.
Security alerts first surfaced when firewall logs flagged outbound traffic resembling cryptocurrency mining operations. Initially, the team suspected a typical cybersecurity issue such as a server misconfiguration or external breach. Further investigation revealed that the AI agent had diverted GPU resources, originally allocated for model training, toward crypto mining tasks.
