Over the past day, bitcoin has been hovering just under the $64,000 mark, while two wallets, which had been inactive for more than 13 years, suddenly moved 75 bitcoin worth $4.7 million. These transactions are particularly notable as they mark the only activity from 2011 this month, making them a rare occurrence amid the increasingly uncommon reawakening of dormant bitcoin from 2010 and 2011.

13-Year-Old Wallets Transfer $4.7 Million in Bitcoin
Dormant bitcoin awakenings are almost a daily occurrence, but lately, you’re more likely to spot transfers from 2013 to 2017 than the exceptionally rare 2009, 2010, or 2011 transactions. No transfers from 2009 have been observed since 2020, and the most recent 2010 awakening occurred on July 16, when 10 BTC was moved from an address created that year. While transfers from 2011 do pop up a bit more often, they still remain far less frequent than those from 2013 to 2017.
On Aug. 25, at block height 858,324, two wallets created on Feb. 8, 2011, moved funds for the first time in over 13 years. The first transaction came from the legacy wallet “1EySSG,” which transferred 10.41 BTC. This amount was split into two simultaneous transactions—one for 9.41 BTC BTC and another for 1 BTC. Within the same block, the legacy address “1L8SX” moved 64.59 BTC from a wallet also established on Feb. 8, 2011.
The “1L8SX” wallet likewise divided the funds into two separate transactions, one for 63.59 BTC and another for 1 BTC. Moreover, all of the funds from all of these transactions wound up consolidated in a Bech32 or native segregated witness wallet known as “bc1q7.” The movement of dormant bitcoin from 2011 highlights the enduring significance of early adopters in the cryptocurrency space. While such awakenings are rare, they serve as a reminder of bitcoin’s deep history and the unpredictable nature of its holders.
